Rx Advisor successfully delivers over £1.9m prescribing cost savings for ONWL CCG

July 2013

Rx Advisor was selected as the preferred provider for the ONWL CCG Medicines Management Tender. This service involved delivering prescribing support and medicines management services to 185 GP practices in ONWL CCG. The full report has now been published and is available in the edition of Prescriber published on 19th May 2013 (Click here to read the published paper)

Rx Advisor deployed a team of 22 clinical pharmacists to deliver the service. The service included supporting the CCGs GP practices in implementing the NHS Better Care Better Values (BCBV) indicators and the NHS Quality Innovation Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) targets for prescribing. The service was delivered by deploying a clinical pharmacist at each GP practice for about 1 day per week. The pharmacist worked in close collaboration with the GPs and practice staff to identify ways in which prescribing changes could be best implemented, whilst keeping patient safety at the forefront of any changes made.

The Rx Advisor pharmacist team worked to strict standard operating procedures for service delivery, and also utilised Rx Advisor's IT templates to avoid duplication of work which increased efficiency in service delivery.

The agreed outcomes for this tender was to deliver prescribing cost savings of £1.5 million. This target was exceeded by a significant amount and initial reported savings totaled over £2.3m at the end of the project period. The savings were then independently verified by the CCGs own pharmacists who confirmed that over £1.9 million of prescribing savings were sustained at the GP practices. The Rx Advisor team delivered over 1250 days of service as part of this service.

This is a significant achievement and Rx Advisor is proud to have been chosen as the provider to demonstrate how a well organised clinical pharmacist led service can help to achieve tangible and sustainable outcomes for NHS CCGs. The project findings have been evaluated and were published in Prescriber on 19th May 2013. Click here to view the publication

Rx Advisor would like to thank the GP practices and CCG prescribing team for their support during the service and in particular all of its pharmacists that helped to deliver this service.
